It is situated at the foot of scenic Moran Hill in Pyongyang.
On the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary of Kim Il Sung, the Moranbong Stadium was reconstructed and expanded into an all-purpose stadium in terms of size, capacity, architectural style and facilities, and it was renamed the Kim Il Sung Stadium.
In October Juche 105 (2016) it was renovated to meet the demands of the international standards. It covers an area of 100 000 m² with a total floor space of 46 000 m². The spectators’ seats number 40 000.
The stadium serves as a venue for national political and cultural events, national and international sports competitions including spring and autumn marathon, and colourful sports and cultural activities of students and other people.
Kim Il Sung Stadium is a historic place where Kim Il Sung delivered a speech before the Korean people on his triumphant return to Korea.
