The following happened when the leaders of north and south of Korea met in Pyongyang in June 2000.
A grand banquet was given by Kim Dae Jung, president of south Korea, in honour of Kim Jong Il, Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, at the Mokran House.
A storm of applause rose when the two leaders entered the banquet hall.
Just as the banquet was starting, Kim Jong Il noticed that Ri Hui Ho, Kim Dae Jung’s wife, was not around, and found that she was sitting at another table. Expressing surprise, he asked Kim Dae Jung “How come we can separate another family when we are hoping to solve the problem of separated families?”
Then he called her to sit beside her husband. A south Korean monthly wrote: Everyone present at the banquet expressed great admiration for Kim Jong Il who was endowed with etiquette and prudent behaviours, noble human love and boundless human feelings.
