New Elements Inscribed in National and Local ICH Lists

Eight elements have been added to national and local lists of intangible cultural heritage in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The technique of making the paint of tanchong, or the colourful painting on traditional Korean-style buildings, which has been put on the national ICH list, is a method of making mild tanchong paint of classical beauty created by the intelligent and resourceful Korean ancestors and is still used to decorate and protect the wooden parts of buildings of relics and Korean-style structures.

Also put on the national ICH list are the traditional Koryo medicinal herb processing technique which is conducive to promoting the health of people and its utilization practice and the legend of Mt Chilbo which shows well the history, culture and beauty of the country.

The new local ICH elements are Pyongyang boiled rice with assorted mixtures, a highly nutritious specialty, and different brewing techniques.
