The famous West Sea Barrage is located 15 km to the west of the Port Hotel.
The 8-km-long barrage was built across the sea in five years from Juche 70 (1981) to Juche 75 (1986).
It has three locks through which 2 000 to 50 000-ton class ships can pass, and a railway, road and sidewalks on the dam.
The construction of the barrage made it possible to solve the problems of irrigation to arable areas and water supply in industrial and residential areas in the west sea region. In addition, it raised the traffic capacity of ships and facilitated the transport in the region.
Before the completion of the barrage, the distance from Nampho to Unryul was 200 kilometres by a roundabout route, but now the traffic line was shortened to 8 kilometres. In addition, the landscape on the lower reaches of the Taedong was radically improved.
