It was one day in September 1951. The country was in wartime. President Kim Il Sung was informed from a commanding officer that subsidiary foods had not been provisioned in time to the soldiers of the Height 1211 located at the eastern part of the front.
Taking it serious that soldiers could get vitamin deficiency if they would not eat vegetables enough, the President told him that they should grow bean sprouts and eat them by seasoning or making sprout soup as he would take a step to send beans to them.
In fact, anyone finds it easy to grow bean sprouts if there are some beans. Then the people can take in enough vitamins even in wartime. However, no one had thought of it in those days.
Thanks to the loving care of the President, bean sacks as well as weapons and munitions were also sent one after another to the Height 1211, a fierce battle field.
Afterwards, the People’s Army soldiers used to say that they had defended the Height 1211, which was said to be defended only when a reserve unit for one division would be recruited, with the “bean sprouts reserve unit” sent from the President.
