The Pyongyang Metro, one of the major means of public transport, was inaugurated in September Juche 62 (1973), and underwent four stages of expansion project.
The stations are situated in important places of urban transport and near residential areas, main public buildings, squares, parks and recreation grounds.
Each station is laid out in various architectural forms with an idiosyncratic theme, and the walls and pillars are decorated with works of arts like sculptures, pictures and large mosaic and mural paintings, giving people a feeling of rich emotion.
The Pyongyang Metro has now become a major tourist destination.
