Why Did Feathers Come off?

In July 1954, President Kim Il Sung inspected a poultry farm and found some chickens got their feathers taken off.

The general manager of the factory explained to him that they had feathers taken off because they were pairing at the molting season, but the President said that such case does never occur as molting itself proceeds gradually and asked if he knew why it occurred to some chickens when others were all right. And then the President spoke logically that people do not change their winter dresses all at once with summer ones, either.

Saying that it was a symptom of diseases, the President looked into a chicken which had feathers fallen off a breeder had brought.

At that moment an official told the President what he had thought of.

He said: “They are suffering alopecia as we did not feed calcium and protein-rich fodders enough which are needed for feather growth at the molting season.”

The President said “All right,” and then laughed a hearty laugh, saying that man made a mistake although the general manager blamed fault on roosters.

There was also a sign of smile in the face of the general manager who reflected on his poverty of knowledge.
