The magnificent Pyongyang Grand Theatre with the Korean-style gabled roofs stands in Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
One day in May Juche 49 (1960) when the project was on the final stage, President Kim Il Sung looked round the construction site. He said to the accompanying officials that the roofs over the stage looked unbecoming to other parts of the building in all respects.
At that time, an official in charge of the construction presented him a letter from a worker about his opinion on the building operations of the stage.
After reading the letter, Kim Il Sung said the people’s opinion was correct. Noting that we should build the theatre as desired by the people as they would be its owners, he indicated the solutions.
That day, he stressed the need to build the theatre well as required by the people and for their convenience as it was a palace of arts for them.
His absolute criteria for dealing with everything were the people’s demands and interests.
