Paektusan Biosphere Reserve in the City of Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province of the DPRK, covers a wide area of Mt Paektu and its surroundings.
The area of Mt Paektu was set as a plant reserve in Juche 35(1946) and then designated as Paektusan Nature Reserve and Paektusan Special Reserve of Revolutionary Battle Sites by the nature conservation policy of the Workers` Party of Korea and the DPRK government. And it was registered as an international biosphere reserve in April 1989 and since then, the protection of its biodiversity has been undertaken in the worldwide concern.
The highest area in the DPRK, Paektusan Biosphere Reserve has a diverse composition of plant species according to the climatic zones and reminds visitors of a natural zoo as it is home to many species of animals and birds, vertebrates and invertebrates acclimatized to the severe northern climate and geological and geographical environments.
Therefore, constant attention has been directed to the observation, study, management and protection of the area of Mt Paektu in the DPRK.
