It is situated on Mansu Hill in the heart of Pyongyang.
It was unveiled in April Juche 61 (1972) on the occasion of the 60th birthday of President Kim Il Sung.
It was built to convey the glorious course of the Korean revolution led by the President and his immortal revolutionary exploits.
In April Juche 101(2012) that marked the centenary of birth of President Kim Il Sung, the bronze statues of Presidents Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il were erected there in reflection of the unanimous will and desire of all the Korean people to hold them in high esteem for all ages.
The grand monument consists of the bronze statues of the great Presidents in the centre, two group sculptures on its both sides, titled, the “Monument to the Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Struggle” and the “Monument to the Socialist Revolution and Socialist Construction” and a grand mosaic mural “Mt. Paektu” at the background.
The group sculptures represent in a comprehensive way the immortal history of revolutionary struggle of the Korean people who have recorded only victory and glory under the wise leadership of the great Presidents. They are 22.5 metres high each, with 228 figures in all.
The mosaic mural depicts Mt. Paektu, which symbolizes the origin of the Korean revolution and the revolutionary traditions.
Covering a total area of 240 000㎡, the grand monument is frequented by people from all walks of life at home and abroad.
Not only on national holidays and commemoration days but on ordinary days it is crowded with people to present floral baskets and bouquets before the statues. Wedding couples are often seen there.
