A Girl Breeder Becomes a Hero

President Kim Il Sung put forward many virtuous persons as the role models and masters of the era. Among them was Kim Jong Sun, Hero of the DPRK.

He came to know her through the newspaper Hamnam Ilbo, which carried a brief article about a laudable deed of an ordinary girl breeder in South Hamgyong Province who, in February Juche 51 (1962), saved seven schoolgirls from drowning in the frozen river.

After reading the article, he told an official with satisfaction that she was indeed a hero.

And he instructed to give wide publicity to her laudable deed through the central newspapers so that young people could learn from her example.

As a result, a letter he wrote to her in appreciation of her deed and a decree of the then Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK on conferring the title of the DPRK Hero on her were carried on the first page of the April 29, Juche 51 (1962) issue of Rodong Sinmun, and an article about her career and her photo on its 2nd and 3rd pages.

Later, Kim Il Sung personally watched the drama “The Morning Glow” dealing with her story. After the performance, he met her and spoke highly of her deed again and had a photo taken with her.
