Day of Historic Significance

On August 25, Juche 49 (1960), Chairman Kim Jong Il accompanied President Kim Il Sung who was on an inspection tour of the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su Guards 105th Tank Division of the Korean People’s Army. That day, he told officials as follows: The army should be powerful if the country is to be strong; it is my determination to develop our country into an invincible military power which no enemy would dare to provoke.

From that day when he started his leadership over the revolutionary armed forces to the last days of his life, he continued his on-site guidance trips for increasing the country’s military might without interruption, shouldering the responsibility for the destiny of his country and people.

He frequently crossed numerous mountains and passes and set out on a sea journey early in the morning or late at night to see his soldiers and inspect frontline posts. The relationship between Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il and his soldiers developed into ties of kinship with no gap between them, and the outposts of the country were defended steadfastly.

In the period of the Arduous March and forced march in the 1990s, when the Korean people suffered the national mourning by the sudden death of Kim Il Sung and the country were experiencing difficulties owing to the moves of the imperialists to isolate and stifle it and to the consecutive natural disasters, he placed the KPA, the buttress and main force of the revolution, in the vanguard and led all the people to the efforts for laying the lasting foundations for building a powerful socialist country.

On September 12, Juche 100 (2011), the last year of his great life, he, recollecting those arduous days, said: The only way for us to defend the country and make our people lead an honourable life as an independent people during the period of the Arduous March was to confront imperialism and push forward with the revolution and construction by relying on the KPA, the revolutionary armed forces; in those days I lived with the spirit to safeguard the country and a do-or-die resolve to dedicate my all without hesitation for my country and people.

Thanks to his devoted efforts for building up the country’s military strength for over half a century, the DPRK could staunchly defend socialism and, by relying on the powerful military strength, achieve successes in socialist construction and give fuller play to its independent dignity and might even in the worst situation.

His undying exploits are being steadily carrying forward by the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un who is the Supreme Commander of the armed forces of the DPRK.
