Taking the Lead in Struggle for the Good of the People

The word army gives one an impression of the standing armed forces ready for war even in peacetime.

As such, an army directs all its efforts in ordinary days to completing preparations for an unpredictable war.

In some countries it is enlisted in emergencies they are faced with, including natural disasters and emergency rescue and relief. However, these actions are but temporary or partial ones.

In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Korean People’s Army is responsible not only for defending the country but also for making breakthroughs at the sites of socialist construction for creating people’s happiness.

Its service personnel can be found everywhere related to the people’s wish, trouble and worry.

Last year in the areas struck by successive natural disasters, they removed the aftermaths in the vanguard of the rehabilitation campaign.

Kangbuk-ri in Kumchon County, North Hwanghae Province, where rehabilitation was finished first in the country, tells of the feats performed by them.

Within tens of minutes, the houses and crop fields there were destroyed by heavy rains and subsequent flooding.

When the locals were at a loss, the service personnel came to help them.

They undertook to do both farming and rehabilitation.

As it was mid-May, after the suitable season of farming was over, rehabilitation of crops was next to impossible.

But they ploughed seedbeds and destroyed wheat and barley fields and sowed seed again. On the other hand, they built foundations of new houses on the sites of the ruined ones.

Some days later, paddies and dried fields were completely rehabilitated and villages formed its appearance.

The local people were deeply moved at the sight of the service personnel who were working devotedly to relieve their trouble as early as possible.

On the day when they moved into new houses, a farmer said: Soldiers worked in spite of heavy rains and strong winds. Their uniforms were wet almost all the time. I can’t forget how they strove to defend people and save crops.

One day in August, when rehabilitation was at its height, it rained heavily threatening to overflow banks of paddies. At this critical moment, the officers and soldiers unhesitatingly threw themselves and formed a wall in the raging water of the Ryesong River. The bank of the river seemed to collapse any moment and they could be swept away. But nothing daunted, they kept standing against the bank reinforced with bags of earth.

This is only a small part of the feats of the service personnel.

Their sincere devotion to the people is embodied not only in Kangbuk-ri but also all other rehabilitated areas, as well as the people’s cultural recreational centres and monumental structures across the country.

They include the Sci-Tech Complex in Ssuk Islet on the Taedong River, villages in the city of Rason built in disaster-hit areas 6 years ago, Masikryong Ski Resort, Mirae Scientists Street, city of Samjiyon transformed into a model of modern mountainous town, Yangdok Hot Spring Resort, Jungphyong Vegetable Greenhouse Farm and Tree Nursery of North Hamgyong Province.

Then, what is the source of their spirit of devoted service to the people?

It is love and trust of Kim Jong Un, Supreme Commander of the KPA, who put them forward in the van of the times as creators of the people’s happiness.

It is thanks to his love and trust that they can always demonstrate their militant and people-oriented characters on the road of service for the people’s happiness.

So, the Korean people proudly call the KPA “our army”.

And this represents their intimacy to the army and their expectation of and trust in it.
