Natural Monument—Plant Fossils at Kumchon

There is a Paleozoic stratum in Hyonnae-ri, Kumchon County, North Hwanghae Province in the DPRK.

Various species of plant fossils are found in the carbonaceous shale of the stratum which belongs to the Devonian period of the Paleozoic era.

They are, in general, Psilophyton and Asteroxylon fossils which belong to PSILOPSIDA.

Their discovery clearly proves that seaweeds in this area evolved into land plants.

The plant fossils at Kumchon are of great academic significance in making clear the origin of fossils of the first land plants in Korea and their evolution, their relationship with the present land plants, etc.
