Chongchon River Is Stocked with Sweetfish Fry

The DPRK is making efforts to protect and propagate sweetfish resources.

Sweetfish is an endemic species of the Chongchon River.

The fish likes comparatively cold and fresh water. Its fry winters in the sea and returns to the river in spring and spawns in autumn.

The Chongchon River is famous for the habitat of sweetfish from olden times.

The fish, 20 to 25 cm long, is known as a specialty of the river for its rich fat and good taste. As it grows very rapidly, it is of great industrial value.

The sweetfish farming base of the Anju City Pedigree Fish Breeding Station in South Phyongan Province has recently stocked the river with millions of sweetfish fry.
